Chris Jay is a frequent contributor to the VC Reporter, a weekly newspaper in print and online in Ventura County and has interviewed hundreds of artists. In he was sued for 10 million dollars by Mike Love of the Beach Boys over an article he wrote on Love and his fronting current line up of the Beach Boys despite having no original members. The case never went to trial and was settled out of court, but all the members of Army of Freshmen had to give depositions during the discovery period of the case.
Most Army of Freshmen fans and even Beach Boys fans are unaware that the lawsuit ever existed as it was settled out of court by before any media was made aware of the suit.

The quartet soon adopted a more jazz -oriented repertoire and renamed itself the Toppers. In September , the quartet went on the road as the Four Freshmen, and soon drew the admiration of jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Woody Herman.
He "had been told at his own show earlier that night about a quartet in town that sounded like his piece ensemble",  and was sufficiently impressed that he arranged for an audition with his label, Capitol Records , which signed them later that year.
B's Blues", and appeared in their first and only film, Rich, Young and Pretty. Later in the year Capitol rejected their proposed next single, " It's a Blue World ", and dropped them from the label. In May of the following year, a furious Stan Kenton demanded that the record company send them the demo tapes so that they could promote the song themselves. In , Hal Kratzsch, tired of touring, asked the group to replace him, and they selected Ken Errair. In , the Freshmen recorded their first album, Voices in Modern ; " Mood Indigo ", a single from this album, charted. This iteration of the vocal group had three of the original members plus Bill Comstock who had replaced Don Barbour a few years after the group was formed. The fact, however, is they are off form in this concert and actually wander from the pitch from time to time as on "Misty Roses" and on "Girl Talk.
In fairness, they apparently had a long trip from LA and just made the Clearwater gig which may have thrown them off. Also, the session is marred by exaggerated self congratulation antics after each tune. But most of the time the singing sounds as if they are doing a parody of themselves.
Sexy Trippy All Moods.The Four Freshmen had several moderate hits during the years , including “It Happened Once Before,” “Mood Indigo,” “Day by Day” and “Graduation Day.” The group entered the LP era in the late ’50s with several album hits, including their instrument series (Four Freshmen and 5 Trombones, 4 Freshmen and 5 Trumpets, etc.).
