Howlin For You - The Black Keys - BBC Sessions (Vinyl, LP)

After a Europe tour left the band in the red, they caved to a series licensing agreements. This was the real root of The Black Keys success. It started with a Nissan spot and led to more than placements in TV shows, films, commercials and video games. It would take one more tweak before The Black Keys were ready to be prime time players, and that would come from Gnarls Barkley producer Danger Mouse.

It was a huge shift for the duo who had so far recorded its own material in their homes. The fleshed-out compositions gave the bluesy band a new dimension. It started to look like the hard-working boys would have their day in the sun, but emotional storms brewed to tear the ship apart. Life became a bitter country ballad, complete with a cheating wife who sleeps with your best friend and takes you for your money.

The drummer became despondent, and communication with Auerbach broke down. Nonesuch was initially perplexed, but once the label's marketing department approved it, he went with it. Michael said taking risks with an unconventional packaging added an incentive to purchasing physical copies, while acknowledging the minimalistic cover also helped with digital copies given "it does jump out on the iTunes page".

The album was released as a inch double LP. When first opened, the label on the disc is almost entirely black. However, the label is heat-sensitive and turns white when played in a disc player for a long enough time. The label can also be revealed by touching the disc. On finding the heat-sensitive ink Carney told the Los Angeles Times , "Before we started the design, I talked to the people [at the label] and said I'd heard of this ink. Literally, every ink supplier was contacted.

People are really open to making new packaging. Brothers garnered critical acclaim. All tracks are written by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney , except where noted. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

That idea morphed into a bona fide super-session between the boys and some serious hip-hop figures that they wanted to collaborate with, including Mos Def, Raekwon, Q-Tip, and RZA.

We finished Blakroc two or three days before we started our record. Blakroc was kind of a warm up for Brothers. In the process of making the Blakroc record we got more and more accustomed to the approach of making music with more bass lines and keyboard riffs than guitar riffs. There is less guitar on this record than any of our other records. I think we were just trying to focus on the grooves rather than what we had expected from ourselves previously. That definitely had a lot to do with the way we went about crafting the songs.

We got what we needed out of that room. We just get so focused. And unwind, in their fashion, they did. But the next day our manager showed up from Nashville with the harpsichord and we had both spaced on what had happened. Someone like Mos or Raekwon, they can really get into character in front of the microphone. So I really went for it, too, and did all kinds of different shit, I used whatever range I had. The Black Keys rely on less yet ingeniously achieve more. Grammy Award—winning engineer-auteur Tchad Blake mixed the album and totally got the concept.

There are no more than 11 or 12 tracks on one song. All the drums are on one or two tracks, which is sort of unheard of in the modern-day recording world. So he was really excited about our record, he would call us up and just tell us how much fun it is to mix this stuff because it was so raw.

Respecting the past while being in the present. Initial collaboration began when Danger Mouse a. As the band began composing tracks for Turner early last year, though, they quickly realized they were actually laying the groundwork for a new album of their own.

By recording in an actual studio another first , guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney were given the opportunity to add a variety of instruments to their usual simple set-up—including organ, moog, and banjo. A behind-the-scenes interview with Piliero, filmed during production of the video, has tongue-in-cheek commentary and brief clips of the cast members describing their characters.
